I was watching an amazing documentary on Justice Clarence Thomas called “Created Equal” for the second time this weekend. This time, I watched it with my husband, who is a black American who leans right. It brought up many emotions for us both and we were both struck by how Clarence Thomas did not minimize the effects of racism in America, particularly during the 50’s and 60’s, but refused to allow them to define him for very long.
“They” say that if you are not a liberal when you are young, you have no heart. And if you are not a conservative when you are older, you have no brain. Well, actually that quote has been attributed to everyone from Benjamin Disraeli to Winston Churchill, but it doesn’t really matter who said it. What matters is that it is not enough to explain mine and my husband’s conversions. Suffice it to say, we were both members in good standing of the democrat party until we found ourselves standing in the party with a bitter tasting cocktail in our hand and nobody we wanted to associate within the party. And while we didn’t immediately decide to become Republicans, we began to freely articulate a set of values and standards that were biblical and part of our own families histories.
It was absolutely amazing just how much easier it was to say we did not support the killing of the unborn than it was trying to make an argument for “choice.” It sure was simpler to demand that the second amendment be accepted as the founding father’s intended it be, as a means for a free people to retain there freedoms. For once, we didn’t have to pretend that we were either oppressed or oppressors. No more staying silent when people told us that marriage was not between a man and a woman, period. And the amazing freedom that comes when you no longer have to agree with all the humanist crap that there is no God or that government is the means by which people live their lives morally. No more equivocating when it comes to the death penalty, there are just some crimes that demand a person be removed from the planet and we allow any redemption to come from their Creator. I am grateful that as a conservative i don’t have to allow my pre-pubescent children or grandchildren to tell me what is and isn’t appropriate. Our home is a benevolent dictatorship, he who pays the bills makes the rules. And one of the most valuable benefits of being an outspoken conservative is I can back up my positions with facts, rather than emotions. Like, if you have a penis, you are a male. Like if there’s a heartbeat, it’s a life. Like submission is a choice, and there is peace and an order to the universe that I enjoy.
And as the character played by Lily Tomlin used to say: The best mind-altering drug is the truth.
